RATTACHÉ À LA FACULTÉ DE MÉDECINE, LA PLUS ANCIENNE D’EUROPE FONDÉE IL Y A HUIT CENTS ANS, IL ASSOCIE TOUJOURS MISSION UNIVERSITAIRE ET PROPENSION À L’IMAGINAIRE, LE TOUT SOUS LA MAXIME « VIVEZ JOYEUX », INSCRITE AU DOS DE LA STATUE DE RABELAIS ACCUEILLANT LES VISITEURS.

HISTOIRE NATURELLE Dès le Moyen Âge, Montpellier se distingue par son savoir botanique. Riche d’une garrigue foisonnante d’herbes médicinales et d’un port ouvert aux grandes expéditions, la cité, entre plantes endémiques et importées, est propice aux apothicaires. En 1593, Pierre Richer de Belleval, docteur et botaniste émérite, propose à Henri IV de créer un jardin royal pédagogique. Au sud, les plantes médicinales entre l’orangerie et la serre aux succulentes. Au nord, une forêt aux diverses essences, dont une bambouseraie aux arbres séculaires. Au centre, « le mont Richer » illustre le génie de Pierre Richer de Belleval qui initie une culture en terrasse.
