OUT FRI. 1/27 A DOG’S PURPOSE Swedish director Lasse Hallström put himself on the cinematic map with My Life as a Dog, his 1985 Oscar-nominated foreign-language hit. His latest film, the much more literal A Dog’s Purpose, is the story of a pooch who goes through many lifetimes and owners, including ones played by Dennis Quaid and Peggy Lipton. The pup’s inner voice is provided by Josh Gad (who replaced Bradley Cooper mid-production). W. Bruce Cameron adapted his best-selling 2010 novel of the same name. “Screenplays are always easier in one regard: They are short,” he says. “On the other hand, you have to keep throwing out scenes you might really like, and that’s really emotionally difficult.” The story may be heart-wrenching at times, but Cameron reassures filmgoers that “this is going…
