A car such as Colin Shepherd's C-series Kadett Coupe would have caused a minor stir in suburbia in 1979, when Opel ownership meant you were a cut above the average. It is also a prime example of General Motors’ world car programme that resulted in one platform being sold with approximately 40 different names. GM commenced its T-Car programme (codenamed 1865) in 1970, with the objective of creating a global small car. Opel was responsible for the basic design, including chassis and suspension, which served as the template for the entire programme. The Brazilian-built Chevrolet Chevette was first to debut in March 1973, followed by the Kadett C six months later.
