It’s been nearly 50 years since the last Tour of Britain and although there have been many rumours of a revival since then, somehow it’s never happened. In fact the Tour of Britain — a fascinating combination of racing, rallying and long-distance motoring — was only run four times, between 1973 to 1976, and in that period the Escort RS2000 (Mk1 or Mk2) won on the three occasions when it was eligible. Although suggestions that the event’s regulations might have been written with the RS2000 in mind are wide of the mark (cars like the Triumph Dolomite Sprint were just as versatile), it’s probable that it was just such an event — varied, gruelling, demanding on cars and drivers — for which this car was ideal.
