DELECOUR AND THE MONTE

When Francois Delecour clambered atop his rally-winning Escort Cosworth at the conclusion of the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally, he was doing more than merely staking a claim to that year’s drivers’ title, he was expunging a Monte-specific demon, one that had bedevilled both him and his employer for years. For Ford, the Monte had been something of a bogey event, and prior to 1994, you had to go all the way back to 1953, when Maurice Gatsonides (of speed camera infamy) triumphed in a Zephyr, to find the last time a car with a blue oval won the most prestigious round of the WRC.
