When all development work on Sierra Cosworth 4x4s had ended in 1992, Ford was busy making every effort to finalise the then-new Escort RS Cosworth. With over 2500 cars already built at Karmann, Germany, Ford knew that Group A homologation for 1 January 1993 was assured. Manager, Colin Dobinson, decided to commit Mobil-sponsored Escort RS Cosworths to 10 World Championship events. For the first time since 1987 (and then only on the Safari), new championship rules made it compulsory for cars to appear on the other side of the world, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. The FIA ruled that a team could nominate entries in 10 events, though only eight scores would be counted, and only six of those scores could be made in Europe. In a pre-season announcement, Ford…
