ERNEST THORPE TRANSPORT REMEMBERED

Following the closure of Ernest Thorpe Transport last September, CVC reader Gordon Mitchell sent us some photographs of lorries from this well-regarded operator. As we reported in our October 2022 issue, well-known Sheffield-based operator Ernest Thorpe Transport ceased trading in September 2022. In business since 1921, Thorpe’s was a refreshingly old-school operation, with lorries being owned rather than leased, and a firm with an excellent reputation for good customer service and looking after its employees, many of whom had been with the firm for over 20 years. Lorry enthusiasts, too, found much to love. The fleet was a mix of lorries that had been bought new and secondhand – until the early 1990s three or four new lorries were bought every year.
