Editor’s Introduction: Last month marked the 10th anniversary of the death of Fr. Hugh Thwaites, S.J. I had the opportunity to know Fr. Thwaites during the years that my family and I lived in London. He converted to the Catholic Faith as a result of his harrowing experiences in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. I remember him telling some of our children how he built the bridge over the river Kwai. Although he lived through the fall of the Philippines and the Japanese prison camp, he was never bitter about those experiences. I remember he would say that the Japanese had not received Christ and therefore did not know what they were doing.
