At school, me and my mate Alastair were convinced we’d be front-running F1 drivers. And I don’t mean we daydreamed about it. I mean we were convinced. Weirdly, I don’t recall either of us being at all worried about the fact that, at 15, that ship had clearly already sailed. We would, we figured, end up as teammates. One of us would likely have to punt the other one off to secure the title. So be it. We were, we decided, cool with that. And it had to be F1. Sportscar racing was great but no. Ditto WRC.
