As the great bard Marshall Mathers put it, opportunity comes once in a lifetime. The introduction of a hotly anticipated new car doesn’t just get enthusiasts lining up outside dealerships—it can also put cartoon dollar signs in a salesperson’s eyes. Some buyers are willing to pay a bit more for the privilege of being among the first, and dealers will happily squeeze the hoi polloi until the supply catches up. But just as Icarus didn’t ask about the melting point of wax, dealers too can get overzealous, tacking on profit boosters so extreme that aggrieved buyers turn to the internet to shame the offenders. The supply-chain woes of the past few years only boosted the prevalence of both markups and buyers appalled enough to warn the public. It’s become so endemic…
