The Vitruvian Man probably isn’t the first image that comes to mind when you think about a racing driver’s physique. But just because motorsports competitors sit for the duration of a race doesn’t negate the fact that they are trained athletes. After all, being able to engage enough muscle to maximize the braking of a modern Formula 1 car requires vigorous fitness training. Add in a race car’s high lateral g-forces and a steering wheel that—even with the benefit of power assist systems in some racing series—is keen to challenge the driver to an arm-wrestling match.
