I SPENT an interesting time in excellent company over a cuppa and chocolate biscuits. Well-known shipping personality Dennis Henwood and I gathered at the home of former nuclear submariner Robert Maydon last week – the second such gathering in a fortnight – and, in that most agreeable company, I listened intently as the stories unfolded. Dennis’s late father, Paul, then a sub-lieutenant and later a prominent figure in the South African retail sector and a director of the Anglo-American Chairman’s Fund, was aboard the destroyer HMS Foresight when she was attacked off Malta in August 1942 during the famous but perilous Operation Pedestal, one of several convoys that were sent to resupply the island, but that came under ferocious attack from German and Italian aircraft.
