Anna Sewell was born into a Quaker family in 1820, and her mother, Mary was a successful children's author. Black Beauty was Anna Sewell's only published work, and she died in 1878, just months after the novel's publication.
As well as being a novel, written to entertain readers, it also teaches kindness towards others, and not least towards horses.
Having sold fifty million copies to date, this classic novel remains as popular today as when it was first published in 1877.
