The contents of this volume were delivered as lectures to two congregations over which I had the honor to be Pastor, first at Bethesda Free Chapel, Sunderland, England; and then, at Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh, Scotland: and they were delivered without alteration as here given. The number in attendance was large in both places, and a lively interest was maintained throughout a session of some seven months in each case. I mention this to show that there is no need to vulgarize the Bible in order to popularize it; and to express the hope that there may be in our time a great revival of interest in the study of the Word of God, on the part alike of Pastors and people.
