A mixed bunch, united by their single gear ratio. A dashing city porteur, an aspiring track racer, a dedicated multitasker, and a fully featured commuter. First up, the steel Genesis is super practical and comes fitted with quality mudguards. The cheapest on test, it’s tough and low maintenance, so is likely to prove economical in the long run, too. A solid bike that’s ready to tackle most applications, it lacks a little spark on account of its weight. By comparison, the Cinelli is an outlier – the only one of our test bikes supplied with a fixed sprocket, it’s essentially a lightweight aluminium track bike with geometry softened slightly for use on the road (plus optional brakes to make it road legal).
