A BUYER’S GUIDE The laws surrounding lights for cyclists in Britain are rather confusing, but fitting decent lights to your bike is a sound idea in principle – even if you decide to forgo the also legally required pedal reflectors that some say look a bit a naff (we couldn’t possibly comment). The most important thing is that you make an effort to see and be seen, not just for legal compliance but also for your own safety. For riding in built-up areas where there’s plenty of light from street lamps, shop fronts and other traffic, you may get away with front lights as low as 15 lumens. Out on unlit country lanes, you don’t just want other road users to see you, you need to light up the road…
