1x – The Future?

Known as 1x (say ‘one-by’), the simpler set-up of a single chainring is starting to become more popular on road bikes, both with manufacturers and riders alike. But surely having more gears is better? Well, if that were the whole story, we’d all be riding triple chainsets. The history of cycling is littered with innovations that soon fell by the wayside, but in the case of single chainrings, it’s in many ways going back to basics, turning back the clock on developments in multiple gearing set-ups. And from next season, the single chainring will return to toplevel pro road racing for the first time in living memory, with the 3T Strada set to be used by the Aqua Blue team.
