Fitting drop bar shifter cables

STi shifters were a revelation for road bikes, allowing you to change gear without taking your hands off the bars and reaching for a downtube shifter.

There are two types of shifter. The first has two separate parts to each brake-lever. Swinging both parts inwards towards the centre of the bike pulls cable into the shifter; pushing just the part nearest the bars sideways releases cable from the shifter. Pushing this lever repeatedly inwards slackens the cable. The second kind has a single brake-lever. Swinging this sideways towards the centreline of the bike increases cable tension. There’s also a thumb button on the side of the brake-lever body. Pushing this repeatedly releases cable until you reach the ‘cable slack’ position.
