Fitting a new gear cable – twistshifters

SRAM GripShift cables have an undeserved reputation for being difficult to fit. The very first models were a bit of a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, but current designs are much easier. Check your old casing lengths as a guide to fitting new ones.

Remove old cable and casing, cutting off the old cable about 15cm (6 inches) before it enters the shifter. You’ll need to shift into a particular gear to expose the head of the cable. When you look at your gear indicators, one may be a different colour than the others, or one of the numbers may have a circle drawn around it. If all the numbers look the same, shift into the highest number on the right-hand shifter (8 or 9) and into 1 on the left-hand side. Step 1: Pull gently on the cable as it enters the shifter through the barrel-adjuster and shift into the correct gear. Remove the escape hatch or slide it to one side (sometimes this needs a little help from a screwdriver or pliers)…
