Fitting a new gear cable – triggershifters

Fitting a new gear cable is the easiest and cheapest way to upgrade your shifting. You’ll need to arm yourself with a 5mm Allen key and a decent pair of cable cutters, as well as new cable, casing and ferrules for the ends of the sections of casing.

The procedure for changing cables is the same for front and rear shifters. Rear gear cables need changing more often because the section of cable near the back wheel gets filled with dust and mud easily, making your shifting sluggish. For either derailleur, cut off the cable end and undo the cable clamp bolt at the derailleur. Pull the cable gently out of each section of outer casing in turn. Work all the way to the shifter, so that you end up with bare cable hanging out of the end of the shifter. Follow the three steps below to fit the new gear cable to the shifter, then route the new cable back through the outer casing to each derailleur.
