Shimano chains

Shimano chains need to be treated slightly differently from standard chains. The rivets that join each link are very tightly fitted together, so it will usually damage the chain plates if you try to reuse an original one.

When splitting and rejoining a Shimano chain, the rivet must be pushed all the way out, then replaced with a special Shimano joining link. The rivets are different lengths to match the different chain widths used by eight- and ninespeed systems, so make sure to choose the correct replacement: the longer eight-speed rivets are grey, the shorter nine-speed version is silver. The replacement rivet is twice as long as the original rivets and has a groove in the middle. The first section is a guide to locate the rivet correctly in the chain and must be broken off once the second part of the rivet has been driven home with the chain tool.
