Front gear cables on STi levers tend to last for years as they don’t get forced around tight bends and aren’t used as heavily as rear shifters.

The exit point for the cable is hidden beneath the cowl of the shifter. To access it, you need to pull the lever right back towards the handlebar. The exit hole will be on the outside of the lever blade, directly opposite the point where the outer casing enters the lever. The cable can only be extracted when the gear shifter is set so that the cable is slack. There are two types of STi shifter. In the first, the brake-lever is in two parts. Swinging both inwards towards the centre of the bike makes the cable tighter; swinging just the back one towards the centreline loosens the cable.
