The Beatles were a British rock band formed in Liverpool, in 1960, consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era. In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania", but as their song writing grew in sophistication they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions.
Formerly called the Quarrymen the Beatles built their reputation by playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg before being molded by manager Brian Epstein and producer George Martin who greatly enhanced their musical potential. Their first hit came in 1962 with Love Me Do and they quickly became mega stars in both Britain and America earning the nickname "The Fab Four."
From 1965 onwards, the Beatles produced what many critics consider their finest material, including the innovative and widely influential albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The White Album (1968) and Abbey Road (1969). After their break-up in 1970, they each enjoyed successful musical careers. Lennon was shot and killed in New York in December 1980 a week before he telephoned George Harrison to tell him he couldn't conceal the big lie anymore.
George Harrison survived an attempted assassination in December 1999 but died of lung cancer in November 2001. Before he died it is claimed that he released the details of the big lie to close friends.
According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the best-selling music artists in the United States, with 177 million certified units. They have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other act. In 2008, the group topped Billboard magazine's list of the all-time most successful "Hot 100" artists. As of 2014, they hold the record for most number-one hits on the Hot 100 chart with twenty. They have received ten Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Score and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. They are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 600 million records worldwide
They were also involved in the biggest cover-up in rock and roll history when they conspired with the British Secret Service Mi5 to conceal from the general public the death of their most popular bass guitarist, Paul McCartney, who was de-capitated in a car crash on the 9 November 1966. The band with the assistance of Mi5 replaced Paul with a Canadian Military policeman look alike called William Campbell who for nearly fifty years has masqueraded as Sir Paul McCartney. Crazy or what: you decide.
