Now the planets are improving, try this tough test – capturing details of their moons

The planets are coming back in droves. After their poor performance in the first half of 2024, they are now moving out of the Sun's glare into the expanding autumn darkness. Not only that, but those that have been horizon-huggers in recent years are now able to reach higher altitudes. This is great news, because it lifts them out of the turbulent atmospheric murk lower down. To celebrate this, our challenge this month – and it's a tough one – is to capture details on planetary moons. It will require good seeing and preferably a large scope. The contenders here should be fairly obvious, as many of the Solar System's moons are physically too small and too far away for amateur equipment. This leaves the larger contingent, namely the four…
