Astronomy Photographer of the Year Advice from a highly commended entrant in 2024’s awards Capturing the Universe in motion is one of the most exciting aspects of astrophotography. It pushes the limits of both your equipment and imagination. With the help of digital planetarium software, it’s possible to prepare for special alignments between celestial objects. This is exactly how I was inspired to capture my image of the dwarf planet Ceres transiting the Mirror Galaxy, M100, that was highly commended in the Planets, Comets and Asteroids category of 2024’s APY competition. Preparation for this sort of image is arguably as important as the processing steps themselves. I used Stellarium to research multiple small celestial objects.
