A dust-up with a neighbour left this one-of-a-kind galaxy with nine rings

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE, 4 FEBRUARY 2025 This is LEDA 1313424, a spiral galaxy that’s around 2.5 times larger than our own Milky Way. Uniquely, LEDA 1313424 has nine rings, where other spiral galaxies have a maximum of three – giving the object its nickname, the Bullseye Galaxy. That’s because, around 50 million years ago, the blue dwarf galaxy seen to LEDA 1313424’s immediate left passed right through its larger neighbour. This extremely rare event sent waves of material flying both inwards and outwards, which then coalesced into the series of concentric rings seen today.
