Römer Type: Crater Size: 40km Longitude/latitude: 36.4° E, 25.4° N Age: Around 3.9 billion years Best time to see: Four days after first quarter (2 April) or three days after last quarter (16–17 April) Minimum equipment: 50mm telescope The crater Römer is named after Ole Rømer, the Danish astronomer who made the first measurements of the speed of light in 1676. It’s a distinctive 40km-diameter crater somewhat disguised by its heavily cratered surroundings, located in the highland region to the east of 650km Mare Serenitatis. It sits in a position roughly one-quarter of the way from the eastern edge of Serenitatis, marked by the circular bay formed by the flooded 61km crater Le Monnier and the northwestern edge of 620km x 570km Mare Crisium.
