Dark, dry skies are the key to finding even more galaxies

Whether your telescope is large or small, get to the darkest site available to you. There is nothing that’s more spoiled by light pollution than galaxies. If you’re a new observer, you may be amazed to find a 6-inch telescope under dark skies delivers more galaxies, and details in those galaxies, than a 10-inch under suburban skies. You can see many galaxies even from city skies, but darker is always better. When pursuing the most difficult targets, wait for a dry night. Humidity in the air scatters light pollution and makes it worse. Even on a dry night, you will have to deal with some light pollution.
