Avoyelles Parish was one of the original parishes created by an act of the Louisiana Territorial Legistlature in 1807. It was created out of the old Spanish Military Post, La Poste des Avoyelles. In 1807, the American system of government began replacing the old Spanish post system. The Spanish era commandant position became the parish judge, the alcolades became the Police Jury.
