Christian Deltombe looks back on a career of top-level rally and race engineering

When Richard Burns was struggling to get the best out of Peugeot’s 206 WRC, Christian Deltombe was drafted in as the 2001 World Rally champion’s engineer. Through his career, Burns was the sort of driver who liked to have his own team around him. Once you were in that team, you were in, but getting in wasn’t easy. The Englishman was a most exacting driver, who refused to rest until every avenue and every opportunity had been explored, debated and rethought. A decade into his own engineering career and already sporting a CV featuring a Laurent Aiello DTM programme with Audi in 2000, Deltombe wasn’t interested in joining any team other than Peugeot Sport.
