Last month, some factions within the World Rally Championship declared themselves ready to flick one of the founding rounds of the series – Rally Sweden – because it was a touch too warm. The snow wasn’t WRC-spec, the ice not icy enough. Winter’s absence from the series’ only winter rally is a significant issue. But if we’re going to take the Swedes to task, then last week’s Rally Mexico demands a closer inspection too. On a variety of levels the Leon-based event fell short of its own high standards set in the past decade. This event’s rise through the WRC ranks is thanks as much to the region’s burgeoning economic prosperity as it is to an innovative and successful programme of educating the local population in the ways of the sport.
