We’ve applied a point for fastest lap to the 1960-2018 seasons. Here’s how it would have changed – or almost changed – the outcome

1974 Clay Regazzoni equals Emerson Fittipaldi’s title-winning score, but loses the crown on wins countback – three to one. 1976 Same scenario as 1974, this time with Niki Lauda equalling James Hunt’s score, but Hunt’s six wins give him the crown. 1981 Carlos Reutemann equals Nelson Piquet’s points, but Piquet still claims it on wins countback. Alan Jones is just a point behind. 1984 Lauda’s half-point title margin over Alain Prost is no longer F1’s closest ever – he extends it to 1.5. 1986 Big change! Prost loses his crown and drops to third, with Piquet nabbing it by a point from Nigel Mansell. 1988 But Prost gets his revenge… now he deprives Ayrton Senna of his first crown by two points. 2008 Lewis Hamilton’s late pass on Timo Glock in Brazil isn’t enough.
