Two years ago, Paddy Lowe was the messiah for Williams. The return to a team where he had once played a key role in the successful active-ride programme of the early 1990s was supposed to set Williams back on the path to the good times. But last week he stepped away from the team for “personal reasons”, widely expected to become an official parting of the ways in the near future.
A car that was late for pre-season testing could be tolerated. One that was slow could not be, especially once it became clear last week that Williams has had to make changes to part of the front-suspension design (an illegal seventh member when the rules permit only six) and the wing mirrors to avoid the parts being deemed illegal…
