Keith Duckworth, principal responsable del Cosworth DFV, se opuso al turbocompresor desde que Renault llevó uno al GP de Inglaterra de 1977. Rendido a la evidencia, en 1984 convenció al responsable de Ford Motorsport, Michael Kranefuss, para que financiara un Cosworth turboalimentado. Inicialmente lo intentó con un motor de cuatro cilindros en línea derivado de la serie que, en la fase inicial de prueba, estaba sobrealimentado por un compresor industrial colocado en el exterior del edificio. Rompió varios prototipos y perdió cuatro meses antes de empezar en el diseño de un motor desde cero.
