En la temporada 1983, además de que por primera vez ganó un motor turboalimentado, hubo dos hechos relevantes para el futuro de la F1. Uno, que McLaren cambió el funcionamiento de un equipo y comenzó a competir con el prometedor motor TAG Porsche; y dos, llegó otro gran constructor -Honda-que tendría éxito donde Renault fracasó. Desde entonces, BMW, Renault y Ferrari, las marcas que habían ganado con motores turbo, empezaron un declive paralelo al ascenso de TAG Porsche primero y de Honda después. Renault perdió su última oportunidad de ser campeón del mundo aquel año. Prost fue despedido días después de la última carrera, por lo que dijo sobre el equipo y por sus problemas personales con el director, Gérard Larrousse.
