FRIDAY Joined the great and good (plus hacks) at Williams F1 near Wantage to see the prime minister open a new HQ for Williams Advanced Engineering, the group’s thriving technical consultancy. In the course of a cheerful speech, David Cameron revealed, almost in passing, that in future councils and not big government would decide about closing public roads for fixtures like the Tour de France. Or motorsport events. It was a bombshell without an explosion. Williams, it turns out, has been doing non-F1 work since the days of the Metro 6R4 and Renault Clio Williams. Today it has a plethora of automotive, aerospace and power generation projects on the go but has never had its own place.
