IN FOR THE LONG HAUL

Any photographer worth their salt will tell you a photo project is an excellent way to absorb yourself in the craft. But what happens if your project has no defined end point? Here’s how to produce fulfilling work when you’re in for the long haul.

I am a photographer specialising in photographing architecture and the built environment and, much like the lifespan of the architecture I love to shoot, I’ve found that the type of projects I like to photograph the most are long term ones. For the last 12 years I’ve been working on a personal project called Woolsheds & Silos, which focuses on documenting the changing landscape of the industrial precinct in the suburb of Invermay in Launceston, Tasmania. When I started I never had a time frame set in mind, I just started to take photographs and the project evolved from there, and in fact what started out as a smaller series of photos of the woolsheds and silos turned into a project that was much larger than I had originally envisaged.
