Best in NASCAR

It’s 25 years since Australia’s first NASCAR champion was crowned. Fittingly, the winning car is displayed in a Launceston museum, in the livery of its greatest achievement down under. Yet, before this car came to Australia, it had already created history in the USA.

Northern Tasmania has a special place in stock car racing history. Not only did the region produce Australia’s most famous NASCAR export, Marcos Ambrose, it also produced our first NASCAR champion, Robin Best. His team, Robin Best Racing, certainly won’t win any ‘Australia’s most famous race team’ awards, but it does deserve recognition for its success in the earliest days of Bob Jane’s Thunderdome. For when NASCAR launched in Australia in the late 1980s, Best’s team showed it was as well prepared as any of the locals for the new racing discipline. The likes of Allan Grice and Dick Johnson may have garnered the lion’s share of media and fan attention, but Best’s small outfit quietly collected its fair share of the silverware.
