As Nicole Gillespie and Stewart Allsop see it, every cloud has a silver lining. The Rockhampton-based couple may have had difficulty recognising the upside when their newborn son, Ty, was diagnosed with a nonmalignant tumour in his airway, but these days they see it as “a massive negative that turned into a huge positive”.
“The treatment meant he had to spend six months in hospital in Brisbane,” Stewart explains. “Nicole had just started a new job, so it made sense that I was the one who should accompany him down south. So I resigned from my job and went with him. It meant we had to sell our house, but at that stage, all that mattered was that he got better.”
