Outrage grenades

The internet doth protest too much at too little, says Jon Honeyball.

OPINION | ONE MORE THING The right to protest is an extremely important part of modern society. In the pantheon of the checks and balances that are required to keep everyone moving in the same direction, protesting has always been vital. Of course, some protests have horrific outcomes. In 1963, the Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk Thích Quang Duc burned himself to death on the street in Saigon, protesting against oppression of Buddhists. This terrible scene was echoed by Maxwell Azzarello outside the Manhattan courthouse at the beginning of Donald Trump’s recent trial, albeit for less understandable reasons. That, thankfully, is the exception. Instead, the internet has generated a group of people who believe that they can protest against anything, bombarding social media with anger and outrage, whether faux or real.…
