The Celts ravaged Aetolia with a graphic ferocity that is so brutal we must again consider the sources with a healthy degree of scepticism, as we must also question the heroic tales of the Aetolian resistance, which includes revenge stories nearly as dramatic as the traumas that instigated them. At the Aetolian city of Callium, for example, the Celtic sack, according to Pausanias, was “without a parallel in the crimes of men”. Pausanias even claims the Celts feasted on the dead Callians. However, the price for the Celts was intensely high. The Celtic host was dogged by hitand-run missile warfare from the Aetolians.
