Most people in America live in a bubble in which police deter crime and arrest criminals; firemen put out fires; and paramedics, nurses and doctors treat the sick and injured. Our so-called “communities” are so compartmentalized by fences, hedges and walls that we ignore each other to the point that it is common for people to live within 200 feet of their neighbors for years without even knowing their names. As a result, neighbors are far removed from providing security and overwatch or any other type of support for one another. Urban residents are even more removed from the concept of community so that it is considered strange or even threatening to make eye contact or greet a stranger on the street or in their same apartment building.
