Having been a police firearms instructor for the past 16 years, I’ve had the good fortune to train with some extremely talented shooters and instructors. The universal truth that is acknowledged by everyone with whom I have ever trained is the need to maintain your skills. Shooting skills are perishable and will degrade over time. I try to provide my officers with quality, focused training at least four times a year. Additionally, I provide them with the tools and encouragement they need to practice on their own in the time between their official training sessions. Unfortunately, not everyone has ready access to this level of training. There is a multitude of excellent shooting schools that can provide the conscientious shooter with quality instruction.
