AMERICA FIRST by Lawton Evans has always been one of my favorite books to use in our homeschool for elementary American History. The author has such a wonderful narrative style that always keeps students engaged. It's a living history book that works perfectly for the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling - where living stories nurture a child's love of learning.
The Problem of Using the Original Text: America First was written in the early 1900s and originally included insensitive language and attitudes regarding Native Americans and people of color. But because it is such a wonderful living book, many homeschooling parents still wanted to use it and resorted to 'editing on the fly' as they read it aloud to thier children.
The Solution in Updating the Text: The updated and revised edition replaces any insensitive and inappropriate terms and attitudes so that you can enjoy reading it to your children without having to edit as you read aloud. Or you can simply hand the book to an independent reader and feel good about what your child is reading.
AMERICA FIRST: UPDATED EDITION includes the following changes:
- Insensitive language has been removed
- Rewritten with inclusivity and dignity of all peoples in mind
- Corrected historical dates for use with timelines
- New illustrations for almost every chapter
I hope you and your children enjoy the updated edition of AMERICA FIRST!
