En lampa lyste genom stormen och mörkret. Nästa morgon hittades en ung kvinna brutalt ihjälhuggen. Inom kort arresterades en av samhällets stöttepelare för mord.

VECKANS BROTT År 1901 var Peasenhall i östra England en liten by där nästan alla var medlemmar i den lokala frikyrkan och de flesta män arbetade på Smyth’s seedmills works som tillverkade såmaskiner. I stora Providence house bodde makarna Crisp som var regelbundna gudstjänstbesökaren i byns väckelseförsamling. Varje vecka skickade Mrs. Crisp dit sin 22-åriga tjänsteflicka Rose Harsent för att städa. Själv var Rose dock en primitiv metodist och på söndagarna gick hon till deras kapell som låg en bit bort från Peasenhall. Här sjöng hon i kyrkokören som leddes av den gifte William Gardiner. Han var född på fattighuset, men genom hårt arbete och gudsfruktan hade han blivit högste chef på Smyth’s och en äldste i de primitiva metodisternas församling.
