AUGUST— DECEMBER 1943 3 SEPTEMBER 1943 Allied forces land on the mainland in southern Italy. 13 OCTOBER 1943 Italy under Marshal Badoglio declares war on Germany. 20 NOVEMBER 1943 US forces invade Betio Island on Tarawa Atoll in the South Pacific. 26—27 DECEMBER 1943 The Battle of North Cape sees the sinking of the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst. Following the crushing victory at Kursk, Stalin ordered a general offensive along the whole Soviet-German front. The army groups that had liberated Orel and Belgorod pressed forward across the steppe and despite hasty eff orts to reinforce the German 2nd Corps at Kharkov, the speed of the Soviet advance created the danger of encirclement and General Raus withdrew his forces on 22 August, a day before the Red Army liberated a battered city.…
