10 JULY— 17 AUGUST 1943 12 JULY 1943 Red Army begins Operation “Kutuzov” against the German-held city of Orel following the end of “Zitadelle”. 17 JULY 1943 Following Allied deceptive measures, Hitler orders reinforcements to go to Greece to resist an expected Allied invasion of the region. 1 AUGUST 1943 Japan declares Burma to be an independent state, though under close Japanese supervision. 5 AUGUST 1943 US forces complete the capture of New Georgia in the Solomons. 12 AUGUST 1943 A force of over 600 RAF bombers attacks the major Italian industrial centre of Milan. It was agreed at the Casablanca Conference that the invasion of Sicily would follow the defeat of the Axis in North Africa.
