RATIONING: THE WAR FOR FOOD

1939—45 4 SEPTEMBER 1939 German War Economy Decree introduces comprehensive rationing scheme in Germany. 8 JANUARY 1940 Britain introduces ration books for all consumers. Bacon, butter and sugar were the first items to be rationed. 3 JULY 1954 Meat is the last foodstuff to be de-rationed in Britain. One of the chief lessons of the First World War was the need to supply the home population with adequate food supplies. The Russian war effort collapsed in revolution partly on account of widespread hunger in the towns; the German war effort was undermined by the harsh “turnip winter” in 1917–18 when the urban population experienced real deprivation.
