23 OCTOBER— 4 NOVEMBER 1942 13 AUGUST 1942 Montgomery takes over as commander of the 8th Army. 14 OCTOBER 1942 German forces begin major assault on Stalingrad defences to drive Red Army into the Volga. 31 OCTOBER 1942 Heavy German bombing raid on the English cathedral city of Canterbury. The Second Battle of El Alamein was the first major victory of British Commonwealth forces against the German enemy and it opened the way to the destruction of Axis forces throughout North Africa. Although the battle was dwarfed by the campaigns on the Eastern Front, it was nonetheless a decisive turning point in Allied fortunes, making the Middle East secure and opening the way for a campaign to liberate the Mediterranean from the Axis.
