19 AUGUST— 19 NOVEMBER 1942 26 AUGUST 1942 General Zhukov appointed deputy supreme commanderin-chief under Stalin. 12 SEPTEMBER 1942 British liner Laconia sunk in the South Atlantic with 1,500 Italian POWs on board. 3 OCTOBER 1942 German rocket scientists successfully launch the A4 missile which was to become the V2 rocket. 18 OCTOBER 1942 Hitler orders that all British commandos who fall into German hands are executed. 4 NOVEMBER 1942 Axis forces in Egypt under Rommel are forced to retreat after defeat in the Second Battle of Alamein. 8 NOVEMBER 1942 Allied forces land in northwest Africa in Operation “Torch”. 11 NOVEMBER 1942 German forces occupy Vichy France in reaction to the Allied landings in North Africa.
